Welding machine repair at our service centre starts not with replacing parts, but with measurements. Until the power supply circuit, the power section and the control have been measured, there is no point guessing whether the cable, the fan or the transistors are at fault: the same symptom – „it won’t weld” – can mean a faulty earth clamp just as well as a burnt-out power module.

Bring your machine to any service point in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda or Šiauliai. The initial diagnostics costs 10 €, and we tell you the repair price after it and agree on it before starting work.

  • How much does welding machine repair cost? Initial diagnostics is 10 €, and repair starts from 15 €. We tell you the final amount after diagnostics and agree on it before starting the repair.
  • What will I find out after diagnostics? We will tell you what has failed and how much the repair will cost. The repair time depends on the fault and on whether parts need to be ordered.
  • Do I need to book in advance? No. You don’t need to book or call – just come to any service point Mon–Fri 9:00–18:00. We are closed at weekends.
  • Is it worth repairing an old machine? Most often yes, when the fault is a cable, a fan, a mechanical part or a few electronic components. After diagnostics, we will tell you whether the repair is worthwhile.

What the symptoms indicate: from „it won’t weld” to overheating

Below are the most common symptoms with which people bring in welding machines. For each, we state what is most often at fault, what you can safely check yourself and what the technician does. Do not open the casing: voltage remains in the inverter capacitors even after the machine is switched off.

01

The welding machine does not work, the indicator does not light up

WhyMost often the power cord or plug is damaged, a fuse has blown, or the input rectifier section has failed. After a power surge or a storm, the input filter may also be damaged.

Check it yourselfTry another socket that definitely works, without an extension cord, and inspect the power cord and plug: cracks, burn marks, loose contacts. Do not open the machine.

What we doWe measure the power supply circuit, check the rectifier, capacitors and fuses, and replace the faulty parts.

02from 15 €

The machine switches on, but does not weld, there is no arc

WhyOften the earth cable, a poor clamp contact or a damaged electrode holder cable is at fault. If the connections are fine, the power transistors or the output rectifier may have failed.

Check it yourselfWith the machine unplugged from the mains, check that the earth clamp is pressed against clean metal, that the holder connector is screwed fully into the socket and that the cables are undamaged.

What we doIf the cable or connector is at fault, we replace it. If not, we measure the power section and replace faulty transistors or diodes.

03

Unstable welding arc, a lot of spatter

WhyMost often the current is wrong, the electrodes are damp or the earth contact is poor. If the settings are correct, the capacitors may have worn out or the control board may be malfunctioning.

Check it yourselfCompare the electrode diameter with the current, dry the electrodes according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and clean the earth contact with the machine unplugged from the mains. For advice on choosing electrodes, read the article how to choose electrodes.

What we doWe measure the output voltage under load and check the control board, capacitors and feedback components.

04

The electrode sticks, the machine lacks power

WhyThe current is too low, the mains voltage has dropped, the extension cord is too long or too thin, or there is an oxide layer on the workpiece. If none of these applies, the power unit may be faulty.

Check it yourselfPlug straight into the socket without an extension cord, clean the metal until it shines and increase the current slightly.

What we doWe measure the input and output parameters, look for the faulty power unit and repair it.

05

The machine overheats and switches off

WhyThe duty cycle has been exceeded, the ventilation openings are clogged with dust, the fan is not turning, or the thermal paste on the power components’ heatsink has dried out.

Check it yourselfUnplug the machine from the mains and let it cool down. Check that the ventilation openings are not blocked and that nothing has been placed on the casing. Do not open the casing.

What we doWe clean the interior, replace the fan, renew the thermal paste and check the temperature sensor.

06

MIG/MAG: the wire jams or is fed unevenly

WhyWorn feed rollers, a clogged wire liner, incorrectly set pressure or a weakening feed motor.

Check it yourselfWith the machine unplugged from the mains, check that the roller groove matches the wire diameter and that the contact tip has not become widened.

What we doWe disassemble the feed mechanism, replace the rollers or motor, and clean the guide liner.

07

The torch gets hot, the cable sparks

WhyPoor contact in the torch connector, a worn tip or damaged cable insulation. In liquid-cooled torches, the cooling system may also be at fault.

Check it yourselfIf you smell burning insulation or see sparking, stop using the torch. With the machine unplugged from the mains, inspect the connector: look for blackening or melted areas.

What we doWe repair or replace the torch cable and connector and check the cooling circuit.

08

MIG or TIG does not supply gas

WhyMost often it is a leak in the hose or connector, a faulty solenoid gas valve, or the pressure regulator. Sometimes the cause is the simplest one – an empty cylinder.

Check it yourselfWith the machine switched off, check that the cylinder is not empty, that the hose clamps are tight and that the hose is not cracked. A leak can be found with soapy water; do not spray water on the machine itself.

What we doWe check the gas valve and hoses, replace damaged parts and check the valve control from the board.

09

The machine gives electric shocks or there is a smell of burning

WhyDamaged insulation, moisture that has got inside, or a broken-down rectifier or capacitor. This is a safety issue, not just a fault.

Check it yourselfUnplug it from the mains immediately and stop using it. Do not open the housing and do not try to dry the machine.

What we doWe measure the insulation, look for the breakdown point and replace damaged parts.

10

The digital display shows an error or the controls do not respond

WhyMost often the control board is faulty, the potentiometer or buttons are worn, and sometimes it is the temperature or current sensor.

Check it yourselfWrite down the error code, unplug the machine from the mains for a few minutes and switch it on again. If the error keeps recurring, bring the machine in.

What we doWe diagnose the control board, repair its circuits and replace controls or sensors.

Myths about welding machine repair

  • Myth. If the machine does not weld, the whole board has burnt out. In fact. Quite often the cause is the earth cable, a connector or a few electronic components. Board replacement is needed less often than it seems, so the circuits must be measured before any decision is made.
  • Myth. A welding machine is basically just a transformer, so any electrician can repair it. In fact. A modern inverter is a power electronics device with transistors, diodes and a control board. Repairing it requires an oscilloscope, a multimeter and knowledge of electronics, not just an electrician’s experience.
  • Myth. If I have unplugged the machine from the mains, it is safe to touch the inside. In fact. Inverter capacitors can hold a dangerous voltage for some time after switching off. That is why opening the housing at home is not recommended – even after unplugging it from the mains, do not touch anything inside.
  • Myth. There is no point in repairing a cheap machine. In fact. It depends on the fault. Repairing a cable, fan or wire feed often costs considerably less than a new machine, and you will find out the price after diagnosis.

Inverter machine repair: why diagnosis matters

An older transformer machine is fairly simple: a transformer, a rectifier and an adjustment unit. An inverter works differently, so the repair is different too. Inside it, the current is converted in several stages, and if any stage fails, the symptom is often the same – there is no arc.

That is why repair begins with checking along the path of the circuit. Transistors are considered one of the weakest points of an inverter, but replacing them without looking for the cause rarely helps: if the cause is not eliminated, new transistors can burn out within a few minutes.

  • The input rectifier and filter smooth the mains current.
  • The power transistors convert it into a high-frequency signal.
  • The power transformer reduces the voltage to the welding level.
  • The output rectifier converts it back into direct current, and the control board supervises all of this.

Technician’s tip: if the machine suddenly stopped welding, do not try to switch it on several times in a row. Repeated attempts can cause more damage than the original fault.

Which manufacturers’ machines we repair and when repair pays off

We accept machines from Kemppi, ESAB, Lincoln Electric, Telwin, Deca, Stanley, Fil-Tech, Hugong, Daewoo, Geko, Kraft & Dele, Scheppach and other manufacturers. If your brand is not on the list, for example Jasic, or the machine was bought from a store, bring it in – after diagnostics we will tell you whether it can be repaired. We use original parts and provide a warranty for our work.

A simple rule of thumb helps with the decision. If the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new machine, it is usually worth seriously considering buying a new one. If the fault is minor and the machine is powerful or specialised (a semi-automatic MIG/MAG welder, a TIG with AC/DC, a higher-class Kemppi), repair is often cheaper than buying a new one.

You can find more about how to carry out quality repairs and which parts to choose in the articles welding machine repair in Vilnius and how to choose parts.

Technician’s tip: if the machine is new and the seller’s warranty is still valid, contact the seller first so that you do not lose your rights. Once the warranty has expired – bring it to us.

How to extend the life of a welding machine

Most inverter failures are caused by three things: moisture, dust and overload. Rain or snow on the machine, metal dust on a construction site, and working longer than the duty cycle allows (the DC percentage) pose the greatest risk.

If you work in a dusty environment, clean dust off the machine regularly and never cover the ventilation openings. Use an extension cord with a sufficient cross-section and do not work when the mains voltage has dropped noticeably. You can find more practical advice in the article electric welding machine maintenance and repair.

  • Keep the machine in a dry place and do not leave it on the ground in the rain.
  • Regularly check the cable insulation and the contacts of the connectors.
  • After intensive work, let the fan cool the machine down instead of disconnecting the power immediately.
  • Clean dust off the machine only when it is unplugged from the mains and only on the outside.

Before bringing in the machine

  • Bring the machine together with the power cord, the earth cable and the torch or electrode holder.
  • Write down when and under what circumstances the fault appeared: during work, after overheating, after a power surge.
  • If an error code appeared on the display, write it down or take a photo of it.
  • If you have the purchase receipt or warranty card, bring it along.
  • Do not open the casing and do not try to repair it yourself.
  • If you need a certificate for an insurance company or another institution, tell us when you hand in the machine.
