Audio equipment repair starts with a question: what exactly do you hear, or not hear – silence, crackling, humming or protection mode. We repair Hi-Fi and car amplifiers, active and passive speakers, car stereos, radio receivers, music centres and home cinema systems. Bring the device to any elMeistrai service point during working hours – no appointment needed.

First we carry out diagnostics for 10 €: we measure the power supply, check the output stage, connections and signal path. Only then do we tell you what is broken and how much it will cost to fix. If the repair would not be worthwhile, we will tell you honestly – the decision is yours.

  • How much does audio equipment repair cost? The initial diagnostics cost 10 €. We tell you the repair price after diagnostics and agree on it before starting work. Approximate prices are in the table below, for example, socket replacement from 20 €.
  • How long do diagnostics take? As an estimate, we assess the condition of the equipment within 1–2 working days. The actual time depends on the complexity of the fault, so we can give a more precise answer after examining the device.
  • Do I need to register in advance? No. You do not have to register or call before coming – just visit any service point on working days 9:00–18:00.
  • Is it worth repairing an old amplifier? It depends on the model, the fault and how much the device is worth to you. After diagnostics we tell you what is broken and how much the repair will cost, and then you can compare it with the price of a new one.

Audio equipment faults: what the symptoms indicate

Below are the symptoms for which people most often bring in audio equipment. For each one we indicate what is likely, what you can safely check yourself and what we do at the service point. Amplifiers contain dangerous voltage and charged capacitors, so do not open the casing – bring the device in for diagnostics.

01from 40 €

The audio amplifier does not turn on

WhyThe most common cause is burnt-out power supply parts: a fuse, rectifier, switching transistors or dried-out electrolytic capacitors. Sometimes only a damaged power cable or socket is to blame.

Check it yourselfTry a different power outlet and a different power cable. Check that the cable and plug are not damaged. Do not look inside the amplifier – that is a job for a technician.

What we doWe measure the power circuit, find the faulty part and replace it. If the output stage has burnt out as well, we check the entire circuit so that the amplifier does not fail again after the repair.

02from 45 €

The amplifier goes into protection mode (protect)

WhyThe protection is triggered by a short circuit in the speaker wires, a load with too low impedance, or damaged output transistors. Sometimes the problem is DC voltage at the output.

Check it yourselfDisconnect the speakers and turn on the amplifier without a load. If the protection no longer activates, the wire or speaker is at fault; if it still activates without them, the fault is inside the amplifier – bring it in for diagnostics.

What we doWe measure the output stage, replace faulty transistors and rectifier parts, and check the bias settings.

03from 45 €

The amplifier overheats and switches off

WhyCauses: speaker impedance that is too low, gain or bass levels turned up to maximum, poor grounding, clogged cooling vents or a stopped fan. In a car, a power cable that is too thin is also important.

Check it yourselfCheck that the amplifier is not enclosed without air circulation, and reduce the gain and bass levels. Make sure the speaker impedance matches the one specified for the amplifier.

What we doWe clean the interior, replace the cooling fan, thermal paste and faulty power parts, and check the stability of the circuit under load.

04from €40

Power steering amplifier not working

WhyWhen an amplifier stops working, the usual culprits are the power supply, a blown fuse, a broken signal cable or a faulty output stage. Before bringing it in, it is worth determining whether the whole system is silent or only one channel.

Check it yourselfCheck for loose or damaged cables and whether the fuse has blown. If you are not sure, bring the amplifier in for diagnostics.

What we doWe diagnose the power supply, signal path and power stage, then replace the damaged parts. We tell you the price before the repair.

05from 25 €

Speaker crackles, hisses or produces distorted sound

WhyMost often the driver’s diaphragm suspension starts to crumble, the voice coil burns out, contacts wear out or the filter capacitors dry out. Learn more in the article why speakers crackle.

Check it yourselfCompare the sound with another source and another cable, and turn the volume down. If it crackles only at a certain point, do not press the diaphragm with your fingers.

What we doWe check the driver and the crossover filter, replace the faulty speaker or capacitors, and re-solder the contacts.

06from 40 €

One channel is silent or plays more quietly

WhyUsually the cause is a single faulty output channel or an oxidized balance or volume potentiometer, and sometimes simply a bad cable or a broken speaker wire.

Check it yourselfSwap the left and right cables. If the same channel stays silent, the amplifier is at fault; if the other side does, it is the cable or speaker.

What we doWe clean or replace the potentiometer, and check and replace the channel’s power components and switches.

07from 40 €

Speaker is completely silent or plays only intermittently

WhyIn an active speaker, the internal amplifier or power supply unit often fails; in a passive one, the driver or a broken internal wire. In Bluetooth models, the battery or module may also fail.

Check it yourselfTry another source and another cable. Do not disassemble the battery of a portable speaker; if it is swollen, hot or damaged, do not charge it and bring the speaker in for diagnostics.

What we doWe determine which unit is dead: the power supply, the amplifier or the speaker driver, and repair or replace the specific component.

08from 20 €

Broken or loose socket

WhySockets (headphone, RCA, optical, speaker terminals) most often break off from pulling the cable or frequent plugging in. The solder joints crack and the contact starts to cut out.

Check it yourselfDo not move the cable in the socket like a lever and do not try to force it in. Try another input if you have one.

What we doWe desolder the old socket, restore the board traces if necessary and solder in a new one.

09from 35 €

Car stereo does not turn on or show a display

WhyThe causes: a broken power cable, a blown fuse, a faulty internal power converter or a display connector. Learn more about car audio equipment – the most common car audio equipment problems.

Check it yourselfCheck whether the car’s fuse for the stereo has blown. Do not connect or disconnect the electrical wiring or the battery yourself – that is a job for technicians.

What we doWe diagnose the power supply and control board, and repair the power converter, connectors or display circuit.

10from 55 €

Home theater system with no sound or no picture

WhyOften the cause is an HDMI socket, a faulty receiver chip module, copy protection or settings. For more details, see the article why HDMI does not transmit sound.

Check it yourselfTry another HDMI cable and another input, select output via HDMI ARC or an optical cable on the TV, and check the audio format setting.

What we doWe check the HDMI board, amplifier module and power supply, and replace sockets or faulty chips.

11from 40 €

Humming or background noise from the speakers

WhyMost often it is a ground loop, poor shielding or dried-out power filter capacitors. In cars, the noise often changes with engine revs.

Check it yourselfDisconnect the sources one at a time and see when the noise disappears. Try another socket or another cable.

What we doWe identify the source of the noise, replace the filter capacitors, and repair the signal and ground circuits.

Myths about audio equipment repair

  • Myth. If an amplifier no longer turns on, it can only be thrown away. In reality. Most often it is parts of the power supply or the power stage that fail, and these can be replaced. Only cases where specific chips are no longer available, or where the repair costs more than an equivalent new unit, become unrepairable.
  • Myth. The more powerful the amplifier, the lower the chance of failure. In reality. Failures are determined not by power but by load, cooling and the way the amplifier is used. An amplifier that runs at maximum volume for a long time with speaker impedance that is too low overheats and fails sooner than a smaller one.
  • Myth. A crackling speaker just needs to be turned down. In reality. Crackling often indicates that the cone or voice coil is starting to fail. If you keep listening loudly for a long time, the damage grows and in the end the whole speaker driver has to be replaced.
  • Myth. You can open an amplifier and check it yourself, because it is not dangerous when switched off. In reality. Even in a switched-off amplifier, the capacitors can retain a dangerous voltage. If you are not an electronics specialist, do not open the casing and bring the device in for diagnostics.

Is audio equipment repair worth it

The decision is simple: compare the repair price with what a new device of the same level would cost. For Hi-Fi amplifiers or home theater receivers, it is worth comparing both amounts, and old analog models do not always have an equivalent replacement.

For cheap compact devices and simple speakers, we calculate more carefully. If the repair would approach the price of a new device and the device has no special value to you, we will tell you so after diagnostics. You pay 10 € for the initial assessment.

  • Worth repairing: Hi-Fi components, studio and DJ equipment, more expensive speakers, car stereos with valuable features.
  • Worth calculating: cheap music centers and compact systems, whose equivalent in a store costs about the same.
  • Worth assessing during diagnostics: if the device is old and parts are known to be hard to find.

Technician’s tip: if an amplifier has started to buzz or shut down, do not use it at high volume from that moment on. A small problem quickly turns into an expensive fault.

Audio amplifier board and sockets before repair

What audio equipment is brought in most often

Systems from various manufacturers are brought to service centers: Yamaha, Marantz, Denon, Pioneer, Sony, JBL, Technics, Harman Kardon, Behringer and others. This is general information about what is common in Lithuania, not a promise of official representation. What matters most is whether we can find the parts and whether the fault can be repaired.

You can also bring car amplifiers and car stereos, DJ and studio equipment, and active speakers. You can read more about what works and what fails in a car in the article about car audio components. If you want to transfer old cassettes to digital, take a look at our cassette transfer service.

Used audio equipment: what to check before buying

Used audio equipment can be a good purchase if you check it before paying. Turn the device on and play it at medium volume for at least 15–20 minutes: this will reveal overheating or unstable operation. Check both channels, all the sockets, and whether the hum changes when you adjust the volume.

If you have already bought a device and have doubts, bring it to us – for 10 € we will assess its condition and tell you whether it is worth repairing. When using an audio system at home, a suitable configuration is also useful, as described in the article how to configure 5.1 audio systems.

  • Do both channels play equally loud?
  • Is there no crackling when turning the volume knob?
  • After several tens of minutes, is the casing only warm, but not hot?
  • Do all the sockets, switches and the remote control work?

Technician’s tip: ask to see the device working with your own speakers or headphones, not just the seller’s.

Before you bring it in

  • Bring the device itself and, if you have it, its power supply or cable.
  • Write down when the fault started to recur and what you did before that.
  • If the fault only occurs with the speakers or the source, bring them as well.
  • Bring the remote control and the main cables, if you have them.
  • Disconnect the device from other equipment and remove any storage media.
  • If you need a certificate for insurance, bring your purchase documents.
