Most common coffee machine faults

Below are the faults that customers most often bring to the service point. We determine the exact cause during diagnostics.

01

Coffee machine won’t turn on

WhyThe most common culprits are the power cable, a blown fuse, a faulty power unit or the control board. Sometimes the machine stops turning on after a voltage surge or after liquid gets inside.

Check yourselfTry a different socket and check that the cable is not damaged. Make sure the water tank and the coffee grounds container are fully inserted.

What we doWe diagnose the power circuit and the control board and replace faulty components.

02

No water or coffee coming out

WhyScaled-up tubes, a clogged brew unit, or a faulty pump or valve. This is often related to water quality.

Check yourselfCheck that there is water in the tank and that it is properly inserted. Clean the outlet openings.

What we doWe clean and descale the system and replace the pump, valves or seals. More in the article why the coffee machine does not dispense water.

03

Coffee is cold or not hot enough

WhyA scaled-up or burnt-out heating element, or a faulty temperature sensor. The first cup is colder if the machine has not had time to warm up.

Check yourselfWait until the machine has warmed up and run the descaling programme according to the instructions.

What we doWe test the heating element and the sensor and replace unsuitable parts. More in coffee machine does not heat water.

04

Grinder not working or noisy

WhyA foreign object has got into the grinder, the burrs or motor are worn, or the beans are too oily.

Check yourselfCheck that there are no stones or other objects in the bean container. Try a different type of beans.

What we doWe dismantle and clean the grinder and replace the burrs or the motor. More in what to do if the grinder does not work.

05

Water leaking under the machine

WhyDamaged seals, cracked tubes, a leaking tank or a worn valve.

Check yourselfCheck the tank and the drip tray for cracks. Do not use the machine if water has reached the electronics.

What we doWe find the source of the leak and replace the seals or tubes. Read about water leaks.

06

Display shows nothing or shows an error

WhyA faulty display, control board or sensor, sometimes a software error.

Check it yourselfUnplug the machine from the mains for a few minutes and switch it back on. Write down the error code.

What we doWe diagnose the board and display and replace faulty components. Read more: coffee machine display not working.

Myths about coffee machine repair

  • Myth. It is always cheaper to replace a broken coffee machine with a new one. In fact. Many faults, such as limescale, worn seals or a pump, can be repaired for a fraction of the price of a new machine. The decision depends on the model and the fault, so it is worth starting with a diagnostic.
  • Myth. Descaling once a year is enough. In fact. The frequency depends on water hardness and how intensively the machine is used. With hard water you may need to descale more often, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the machine’s messages.
  • Myth. If the coffee is sour, the machine is to blame. In fact. Often the cause is beans that are too freshly roasted or stale, or an unsuitable grind size. Only if the beans are good and the settings are correct is it worth checking the water temperature.
  • Myth. Any descaling liquid can be used for any machine. In fact. An unsuitable solution can damage the seals and other parts. Use the product and program recommended by the manufacturer.

Which coffee machines we repair

We accept automatic bean-to-cup, capsule and manual espresso machines. We repair equipment from all manufacturers, including DeLonghi, Saeco, Jura, Philips, Siemens, Bosch and Krups, as well as Nivona, Nespresso or Dolce Gusto.

Every model has its own特点. That is why we start with a diagnostic: we determine whether the electronics, pump, heating element or grinder has failed, or whether the machine is simply scaled up.

Bring the machine with its power cord. If you have them, also bring the water tank and the drip tray, as they help us assess the fault faster.

The most common faults and their signs

Most faults are caused by limescale deposits, worn seals and coffee that is ground too finely. The first signs often appear a few weeks before a complete breakdown: the coffee flows more slowly, the water takes longer to heat and the noise increases.

If you have noticed any of these signs, it is better not to delay. A damaged part can harm others, for example, a leaking tube can flood the electronics.

  • the machine does not switch on or switches off by itself
  • no water or coffee comes out, or water runs into the tray
  • the coffee is cold, too weak or sour
  • the grinder crackles, rustles or does not grind
  • the coffee brew unit is clogged
  • the display shows nothing or shows an error code

Descaling and maintenance

Limescale does the most damage to coffee machines. It builds up in the heating element and tubes, so the water heats more slowly, the coffee gets worse and the pump works under a higher load. Use filtered or softened water and descale the machine according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

If the descaling program does not start, does not help or the machine still works badly afterwards, bring it to the service centre. We handle descaling and cleaning system faults together with other repair work. You can read about water filter maintenance in a separate article.

Do not pour descaling liquid into the machine without the program specified by the manufacturer. An unsuitable solution can damage the seals.

What you can check yourself

Before taking the machine to the service centre, carry out a few simple checks. Sometimes the problem is not a fault but an incorrectly inserted tank or a clogged strainer.

If the machine still works badly after these steps, do not open it up. The machine’s electronic components operate on a 230 V mains voltage, so removing the casing yourself is not recommended.

  • make sure the water tank is fully inserted and there are beans in the bean container
  • clean the brew group head, the tray and the coffee grounds container
  • try another socket and check the power cord
  • try a different type of fresher beans if the coffee is too weak or sour
  • check the error code in the manual or in our article about Jura error codes

Repair or replace the machine

In some cases repair pays off, in others it does not. It depends on the model, age and nature of the fault. For example, a worn grinder or pump is often worth replacing in a more expensive machine, while for a cheap model with a faulty board it may not be worth repairing.

After the diagnostic we tell you what has failed and how much the repair would cost, and the decision is yours. Read more in the article when to repair and when to replace a coffee machine.

Documents and warranty

For repairs we use original parts, and we provide a warranty for the work carried out. If the repair of the appliance is covered by an insurance company, we can issue the required certificate or defect report.

  • the coffee machine with its power cable
